National Nutrition Month:
A Focus on Our Connections with Food

HOUSTON, TX. MARCH 2025

Long before the words “probiotic,” “plant-based,” “flexitarian,” “vegan,” “intermittent fasting,” and “mindful eating” entered the lexicon, the food realm was an easier place to navigate. Kinder and gentler, for sure, but without the science, lifestyle, and nutritional dialogue that obsess us today.

As registered dietitian nutritionist Moe Schlachter observes:
“Food used to be simply a matter of sustenance.”

Today, it is anything but. Sorting out the fact and fiction of today’s diet and nutrition discourse and applying best practices to individualized client care is Schlachter’s forte. His field of study is in the spotlight in March when National Nutrition Month focuses attention on diet and nutrition and its connection to wellness and overall physical and mental health.

Connection is apt, as well: This year’s theme for National Nutrition Month is “Food Connects Us” – a perfect opportunity to examine our often complicated relationship with food.

Here are some key connections we should be mindful of:

Connect with Knowledge:

We are barraged today with information – factual and not – about what it means to be healthy and what constitutes positive, beneficial nutrition. Schlachter says we need to stay informed and knowledgeable about our diets while also enjoying the celebratory nature of food.

“We need to find a good balance between being informed and relaxed when approaching food,” he says. “The more informed you are about food allows you to make choices more aligned with health.”

Connect with Experts:

Schlachter advocates having an annual visit with a nutritionist, just as you would your primary care physician, to get a thorough assessment of your diet, your changing body, and to check for “blind spots” you may not realize are happening with your personal nutrition practices.

These assessments also take into account things such as food patterns, sleeping patterns, and exercise patterns.

“A comprehensive nutritional assessment is the best thing you can do to invest in your long-term health,” he says.

Overall, consultation with a registered dietitian nutritionist goes a long way toward promoting health and wellness through thorough informed nutrition care.

Connect with Culture:

Understanding the foods of your heritage and ancestry can promote positive relationships with food. Celebrating familial foods and traditions (and cultural foodways that define us) can nourish both the body and the spirit.

“The journey to connect with one’s roots through food is very interesting,” Schlachter says. “Learning about our roots – about what our ancestors ate – can be very grounding. It’s a connection to our culture and the earth we live on.”

Connect with Spirituality:

One of the founding tenets of J. Flowers Health Institute’s approach to whole-person health and wellness is understanding the body/mind/spirit connections. Food is part of that exchange when considering that food can feed the spirit; our souls need nourishment too.

“There is a big connection between food and spirituality,” Schlachter says. “Food can help you find the strength to recovery.”
