Celebrating Recovery: Marking Personal Triumphs During National Recovery Month
HOUSTON, TX. September 2024
Success deserves celebration. And in the case of addiction recovery, success is a life-changing course of action that is a triumph not just for an individual but for his/her family, friends and community.
We’re reminded of the power of evidence-based treatment and recovery practices during National Recovery Month held each September. Originating in 1989 originated from individuals recovering through 12-step programs for alcohol and addiction, the annual event celebrates individuals during their long-term recoveries while also providing a supportive forum for the nation’s recovery community.
National Recovery Month reminds us of the courage and resilience invested in recovery – a chance for new beginnings and effective pathways to healing. That message is a fundamental part of the message of hope that is part of J. Flowers Health Institute’s mental health, medical and substance use disorders programs.
For those in successful, dedicated recovery, the joys are profound. And should be celebrated.
“This is an opportunity to be mindful of the gratitude you have for the wellness you achieved,” said Dr. James Flowers, founder and president of J. Flowers Health Institute. “One way to celebrate recovery is to talk about it among your family and friends about how you benefitted and continue to benefit from a life of wellness.”
It’s a goal shared by millions nationwide.
According to recent statistics, 70 million adults aged 18 or older perceived that they have experienced a substance use and/or mental health problem. Of that number, 72 percent (or about 50 million) considered themselves to be in recovery or to have recovered from their substance use and/or mental health problem, according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).
Substance use and mental health conditions impact individuals from all walks of life, and across all age groups. While these conditions are common, recurrent, and often serious, they are preventable and treatable. According to SAMHSA, recovery is defined as “a process of change through which individuals improve their health and wellness, live self-directed lives, and strive to reach their full potential.”
That’s a journey well understood by and embraced at J. Flowers Health Institute.
“There are many paths to recovery – through therapy, healing and trauma work,” Dr. Flowers said. “Yes, you can recover and we are proud to highlight success stories, especially during National Recovery Month.”
